Inside Mount: Measure in Easy 3 Steps
Follow these steps to get perfect measurements for your custom smart shades.
Inside Mount Measurement Guide
Step 1: Measure Window Recess Depth
Before measuring your window’s width and height, make sure to check the recess depth to ensure there is enough space to fit the ZSTARR motorized shade.
Minimum Recess Depth Required by Shade Type:
- Roller & Zebra Shades: 2 1/2" (6.3 cm)
- Top Down Bottom Up Cellular & Day & Night Cellular Shades: 2" (5 cm)
- Roman Shades: 1 1/2" (3.8 cm)
Tip: Ensuring your recess meets the minimum depth helps guarantee proper installation and smooth operation of shade.

Check for Obstacles
Check inside the window recess for any protruding parts, such as the window sash, handles, or locks.
These obstacles may affect how smoothly your shade operates.

Measure Obstacles & Calculate Usable Depth
Do not ignore any obstacles inside your window recess — they can interfere with the installation and operation of motorized shades. To ensure a proper fit and smooth operation:
1. Measure the Window Recess Depth
Measure from the front edge of the window recess to the shallowest point inside.
2. Measure Obstacle Protrusion
Measure the total protrusion of any obstacles, such as the window sash, handles, or other protruding parts.
3. Calculate Usable Recess Depth
Usable Recess Depth = Window Recess Depth – Total Obstacle Protrusion
4. Confirm Minimum Usable Depth Requirement
Make sure your usable window frame depth meets the minimum requirement for your ZSTARR motorized shades.
5. Consider Outside Mount if Necessary
If your usable recess depth does not meet the minimum requirement, consider mounting the shade outside the window frame. Excludes skylight shades.

Step 2: Measure Inside Window Width
Measure the inside width of your window recess at the top, middle, and bottom.
Record the smallest measurement — this will be your custom width.
Tip: Measuring in three places accounts for uneven window frames. For a perfect fit, we’ll reduce your custom width by about 1/8" (3mm) during production to ensure easier installation.

Step 3: Measure Inside Window Height
Measure from the top of the window recess down to the sill at several points (left, center, right).
Record the smallest measurement — this will be your custom height.
Tip: Measure at the points where you plan to install the shade’s headrail or frame for a more precise fit.
Outside Mount: Measure in Easy 2 Steps
Check that there’s enough space between the window frame and ceiling to accommodate the headrail.
Outside Mount Measurement Guide
Measure the Outside Opening Width
Measure the width of the window opening at three points: top, middle, and bottom.
Use the widest measurement.
For proper coverage, add 2–3" (5–8 cm) to each side.

Measure the Outside Opening Height
Measure the height of the window opening at three points: left, center, and right.
Use the longest measurement.
For better coverage, add 2–3" (5–8 cm) to the top and bottom.
